Ideation

Brainstorming, Story and Script Development

This is the most essential part of the production process and where all ideas, concepts, and stories take root.

We try to conjure up the most engaging, passionate, and fun concept we can think of in this stage. If the concept and story live up to our expectations, and to those of the project stakeholders, about 80% of the project's success is assured.

Visual Development

Character and Environment Design, Storyboarding, Graphic Style

In this stage, we pass from a textual concept to a visual one by sketching, designing and illustrating the whole universe of our concept

Characters, environments, and any other details are extensively created alongside storyboards, color keys, and story reels to give the production crew a shared vision of the world that is being created.

3D Assets Creation

Character and Environment 3D Models

The concepts and graphics created in the last stage are now used to create all the 3D assets needed for the production.

We focus on many details in this phase: character topology, clean and homogenous meshes, organic flow, and optimum polygon count.

The 3D assets need to be as believable and organic as their 2D representations.

Rigging and Animation

Character, Props, and Camera Animation

Until now all our assets are just dead, colorless statues; we need to make them move.

Skeletons and advanced control rigs are created to animate the characters, and camera animations define our story scenes.

The continuity of our camera movements and the details of our character animations contribute to the quality of the final animation.
The devil is in the details as they say and even a small movement such as a finger twitching or eyelid batting can make the characters more believable.

Shading and Lighting

Textures, materials, lights and the final look

This is the stage where our assets and scenes start receiving lighting, materials and textures.

This is a critical stage in the production of animation and is what creates the beautiful images we eventually see on the screen.

Great care is taken here to display the appropriate graphic message our story needs to convey.

Rendering and Compositing

Our 3D World Comes Out of Darkness

The rendering process is the processor intensive process where the 3D software converts 3D assets, environments, effects, animations, and everything else into a 2D image.

We need 24 frames for each second of film so for a 90 minute film we would need 129,600 frames of rendered images, but for maximized control and efficiency, production teams need to render several layers for each frame, sometimes as much as 15 or more, which could bring the count to more than 2 million rendered frames.

The rendered layers are then brought into a compositing application where they are mixed and overlaid to create stunning visuals and the final CGI images.

Dynamics and Simulations

Clothing, hair, fur, smoke, fire, explosions, water

No animation project is complete without at least some of the effects mentined above and although modern 3D software has made the production of these effects more straighforward and manageable, they are still extremely difficult to reproduce effectively.

Advanced algorithms and software allow us to create effects that would have been impossible just a few years ago, but you can see a full head of hair on most characters nowadays.

The important thing is to create these effects in a way that makes them believable and integrates them in a way that helps the story unfold flawlessly.
